Wellcome Trust PhD studentship in Bioethics, Science, and Security
You are invited to apply for a three year PhD studentship in theDepartment of Sociology and Philosophy funded by the Wellcome Trust. Thestudentship begins in October 2009 and covers the cost of UK/EU PhD tuitionfees and an annual average maintenance grant of £19,600. Funds are alsoincluded for conference travel.
The studentship is part of a major Wellcome Trust 5 year Enhancement Awardto four universities in the UK and Australia. The holder of the studentshipwill work under the supervision of Dr. Brian Rappert at the University ofExeter (see http://people.exeter.ac.uk/br201/). S/he will have theopportunity to participate in the wider interdisciplinary and internationalactivities of the Enhancement Award.
The overall goal of the Enhancement Award is to stimulate bioethicaldiscussion about the potential destructive applications of modern lifescience research; specifically in relation to adverting its use for thedevelopment of biological weapons. The studentship is open to range ofapproaches (comparative, historical) that consider how bioethicaldiscussions can be furthered in life science communities in order to preventthe hostile application their work. Wide latitude will be given to thechoice of substantive areas under focus.
You will be expected to have a strong first degree (normally at least a2:1 honours degree (or its equivalent)) and preferably have a Masters degreeat distinction level or equivalent. Candidates from a wider range ofacademic backgrounds are encouraged to apply; this includes (but is notlimited to) Sociology, Politics, Security Studies, Philosophy, and Biology.
