Introduction to
THE JAPANESE ASSOCIATION OF HYDROLOGICAL SCIENCES (JAHS)
Establishment and Background
The Japanese Association of Hydrological Sciences (JAHS) was established in June 1987 as a science body of hydrology and water resources related researchers and practitioners in academic, private and other institutions. This is an interdisciplinary association in the field of hydrology, aiming at promoting the study of hydrology mainly as an aspect of the earth sciences.
The association has started as a form to take over the science body of the former association named the Research Group for Hydrology which was established in April 1965 and the “Journal of Japanese Association of Hydrological Sciences ”(previous name, ”Hydrology”) which was first published in1967 has also been taken over by the association and will number Volume 33 in 2003.
The international cooperation between the JAHS and the British Hydrological Society(BHS)has started in 1988.
Membership itself is open to any individuals who are interested in the hydrological sciences.

Institutional Members: Organizations or individuals who are interested in the purpose of this association, shall pay a membership fee of more than one share of 20000 Japanese yen per year for the purpose of supporting JAHS activities. They have same capacity of regular members.
Subscription Members: Organizations who wish to subscribe to The Journal of Japanese Association of Hydrological Sciences, shall pay a fee per year of 12000 Japanese yen.
Honorary members: Individuals,who are recommended as honorary members at the Annual Convention of JAHS, share in the privilege without paying any fees.
1. Research and promotion of hydrological sciences.
2. Publication of the Journal of Japanese Association of Hydrological Sciences (published quarterly in February, May, August and November, mainly in Japanese with English abstracts).
3. Annual conventions, Symposia, and Working group meetings.
4. Communication with academic societies and other organizations both in Japan and in the world.
5. Others
(1) Annual Conventions after 1999:Tsukuba in1999, Kumagaya in 2000, Takamatsu in 2001 and Tokyo in 2002.
(2)Themes of the Symposia after 1999:“Present and future of groundwater environment – Recommendation for the 21st century –“ in 1999, ”Rainfall-runoff processes and groundwater flow in mountainous catchments” in 2000, “Groundwater in the Kanto plain” in 2002.
The association bas been publishing the “Journal of Japanese Association of Hydrological Sciences (previous name, ”Hydrology”)” which is published four issues per year. In recent years, one volume consists of more than 200 pages and contains 3-6 original articles, 5-10 research notes, book reviews, IAHS newsletters, BHS circulations, etc.Most articles are written in Japanese with English abstracts.
Anybody who is interested in hydrological sciences and the purpose of the association can join the association, by filling out and submittingthe application form, and by paying appropriate membership fee.
Payment of Membership Fee
Payment can be made to JAHS either through
1) an international postal money order (postal giro account number of JAHS is 00150-3-12896.) or
2) by sending a Money Order voucher to JAHS.
You will submit with the service charge the amount to be sent a Money Order voucher to JAHS.
