Welcome to the JAIEL
Website!
The Japan
Association of International Economic Law (JAIEL) was founded in 1991 as an
academic association for the study of international economic and business
law. It has some 450 members, who
are university professors, researchers, graduate students, lawyers,
government officials and private practitioners. The areas of law that are covered by
the Association include international law, WTO law, economic law, private
international law, international business law, tax law and intellectual
property law.
The Association’s annual meeting is held normally in late October or early
November for one or two days (see the Past
Annual Meetings). The
meetings are conducted in Japanese.
Occasionally, international symposia and lecture meetings are
organized by the Association which are attended by experts from foreign
countries and are conducted in English.
The Association also publishes the Nihon
Kokusai Keizaiho Nenpo
(Yearbook of International Economic Law) (see the Past Issues of the Yearbook).
Forty members of the Council,
serving three year terms, are elected by the General Meeting in accordance
with the set quota of age groups, regions and fields of expertise among the
members, and also in consideration of the gender balance. Two Director-Generals, one from the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the other from the Ministry of Economy, Trade
and Industry, serve as ex-officio
members of the Council. Executive
officers, namely, President, Secretary-General, Treasurer, Director of
Studies and Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook,
are chosen among the council members.
There are two committees, the Planning Committee and the Editorial
Committee: the former is in charge of planning the annual meetings, and the
latter of editing the Yearbook (see
the Officers
of the Association).
