追悼
日本通訳学会名誉会員である西山千氏が、2007年7月2日、95歳で亡くなられました。
西山千氏は、1911年米国ユタ州ソルトレークシテイで日本人の両親のもとに生まれ、ユタ大学大学院で電気工学の修士号を取得後、不況と日米関係悪化から1935年、日本に帰国なさいました。逓信省電気試験所に就職し、その縁で終戦後は進駐軍（GHQ）民間通信局に勤務。引き続き米国大使館広報文化局顧問として、ライシャワー氏をはじめとする歴代駐日大使の通訳を務められました。1969年にはアポロ月着陸の衛星中継をNHK で同時通訳したことから、全国的に「アポロの同時通訳者」として知られるようになり、通訳者の社会的認知に大きく寄与なさいました。ソニー理事を経てソニー顧問となられ、さらには日本翻訳家協会（JST）理事長、国際翻訳家連盟（ＦＩＴ）理事としても活躍なさいました。主著に『通訳術』（実日新書）、『通訳術と私』（プレジデント社）、『誤解と理解』（サイマル出版）などがあります。
日本の同時通訳パイオニアであり、本学会設立総会では記念講演をして下さった西山千さんが亡くなられたことは、私どもの深い悲しみとするところです。心からご冥福をお祈り申し上げます。

なお、日本翻訳家協会（JST）では、西山さんの誕生日にあたる9月12日に「西山千さんを偲ぶ会」を予定しています。

Obituary
With deep sorrow, I have to inform my fellow interpreters and colleagues that Mr. NISHIYAMA Sen, our honorary member since the initiation of JAIS (Japan Association for Interpretation Studies) in 2000, has passed away on July 2, 2007, at the age of 95.
Mr. Nishiyama Sen was born in 1911 in Utah, USA. He received schooling as a Japanese-American and earned a master's degree in electrical engineering. He came back to Japan shortly before the war and started to work at the Electrotechnical Laboratory of the Ministry of Communications, which eventually led him to work at the General Headquarters of the Allied Occupation Forces. He was then employed at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, where he served as an official interpreter for U.S. ambassadors to Japan, among them Edwin O. Reischauer.
When the 1969 Apollo moon landing was broadcast, he performed simultaneous interpretation on the NHK nationwide TV network, which made him a national figure. People still call him "the Apollo simultaneous interpreter." Later, he served as the President of the Japan Society of Translators (JST), and was an active Council Member of FIT (International Federation of Translators), an UNESCO affiliated world-wide organization for translators and interpreters.
The Japan Society of Translators (JST) will host a gathering in his memory on September 12, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Gakushi Kaikan (3-28 Kanda Nishiki-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). September 12 would have been Mr.Nishiyama's 96th birthday.
