CONFERENCES

IASO Regional Congress
The first ever IASO regional congress takes place this month in Sun City, South Africa. The meeting, organized by Professor Tessa van der Merwe, honorary secretary of IASO and president of the South African Association for the Study of Obesity, runs from October 28-31. In addition a SCOPE Diabetes course is scheduled to be held prior to IASO’s Regional Congress, on
Thursday 28th October 2004.  SCOPE (which stands for Specialist Registration of Obesity Professionals in Europe) was launched by the IOTF in conjunction with the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) last year. Its first Fellows were recently announced at the 13th European Congress on Obesity held in Prague in May this year.  Until now, courses have been piloted solely throughout Europe, and a web-based teaching programme is being developed based on these pilot courses.  Targeting diabetes specialists, this pilot course will be the first step towards extending the programme to other regions of the world.  Case studies, interactive discussions and key references will be highlighted in the course. Nordic Obesity Meeting, Copenhagen.
The Danish Society for the Study of Obesity will be holding its Nordic Obesity Meeting from 22 – 23 October.  The theme of the meeting is ‘Metabolic Syndrome in Obesity’.  For further information please go to http://www.dsaf.nu/

North American Association for the Study of Obesity 2004.
NAASO’s 2004 Annual Meeting takes place from 14 – 18 November 2004 in Las Vegas. NAASO’s 2004 Annual Scientific Meeting offers an exceptional variety of programs, including key lectures, tutorial workshops, clinical workshops, and symposium.  Nearly 2000 attendees are expected in Las Vegas this year, making the 2004 Annual Meeting the largest gathering of obesity experts in North America.   Las Vegas is the place to be in November.  Scientists, physicians, and other health care professionals involved in obesity research, treatment and management will have an opportunity to exchange information and perspectives, interact with internationally recognized obesity experts and network with colleagues.  For further information please go to :  http://www.naaso.org

The 3rd AOASO Conference on Obesity
The 3rd AOASO (Asia Oceania Association for the Study of Obesity) Conference on Obesity will be held in Taipei, Taiwan, ROC on February 25-27 2005 under the auspices of the national association. The theme will be: Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome: New Frontiers of Treatment. Conference chairmen are: Prof. Ruey-Shiung Lin and Prof. Chang Chih Jen. IASO Stock Conference 2005
The fourth annual Stock Conference, so named to commemorate the late Professor Michael Stock, former editor of the International Journal of Obesity, will be held in Istanbul, Turkey from 21st-23rd March 2005.  The meeting will bring together key experts and young researchers to discuss specific topics.  The hot topic will be “Inflammation and Obesity”; the meeting is to be chaired by Dr Gokhan Hotamisligil and co-chaired by Professor Yuji Matsuzawa. There  are 20 subsidised places for young researchers on the course.  For more information, please refer to the webpage: http://www.iaso.org/stock  or email stock@iaso.org.

14th ECO in Athens
The Hellenic Medical Association for Obesity invite you to the 14th ECO, to be held on 1-4 June, 2005, in

10th ICO in Sydney
The 10th International Congress of Obesity to be held from 3 – 8 September 2006 promises to be a memorable experience for all attendees. The scientific program plans on highlighting all the latest scientific developments. In addition, embedded within the programme will be a fully self-contained, accredited course on obesity aimed at general practitioners and other health professionals that will be designed to provide attendees with the latest knowledge on the aetiology, complications and evidence-based management of obesity. ICO Awards 2006 
As
highlighted in the last bulletin, nominations are invited for IASO Awards for Scientific Excellence, which will be presented during the 10th International Congress on Obesity (ICO), to be held in Sydney, Australia, 3-8 September 2006. More details available on http://www.iaso.org/awards/

ECO AWARDS 2005
The European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO)  is  inviting nominations for the Wassermann Lecture Award and the Young Investigators Awards 2005, all of which will be presented during the 14th European Congress on Obesity (ECO), to be held in Athens, Greece 1st-4th June 2005.  More details from http://www.easobesity.org

IASO Fundraising
As part of IASO's development programme, a scrutiny sub-committee has been formed to review sponsorship partners for IASO projects. Members of the committee are Professors Tessa van der Merwe, Ian Caterson and David York. The sub-committee's work provides the basis for further broadening of financial support for a wide range of IASO activities in the future.

The Per Björntorp Memorial Fund - Appeal
A call for donations has been circulated to IASO members to establish a fund in memory of the late Prof Per Björntorp. Contributions have begun to be received, but a substantial fund is envisaged to initially provide travel grants to enable young researchers to attend the International Congress on Obesity.  For further information please contact Kelly Robinson, email krobinson@iaso.org
