Japan Bifidus Foundation

The Japan Bifidus Foundation (JBF) was established in 1981 to conduct research and development relating to the interaction between the host and intestinal microflora including bifidobacteria.
The interaction between the biological host and microorganisms is globally one of the most significant research issues, a multidisciplinary field including life sciences. In recent years, importance of intestinal microflora has attracted much attention as an element of the host’s internal environment. The meaning of interactions between intestinal microflora and body immunity, nerves and endocrine function, and the pathogenesis ascribed to the modulation of these factors and symbioses in the host does not indicate mere biological phenomenon, but gather the interest of people as wisdom of human behavior and function.
The Japan Bifidus Foundation collects and provides as a wide range of information in the field of intestinal microflora. It also organizes scientific meetings, publishes scientific journals and brochures, sponsors other activities in order to contribute to the progress and promulgation of research in the field of intestinal microflora, and promotes public welfare in the world.

Message from the Professor Shuichi Kaminogawa (Chairman of the JBF)

Through recent development in research technologies for intestinal microflora and functional foods for to the progress of human health, the importance of such fields have been gaining much attention due to rising concerns about health throughout the world.
In Japan, facing an aging society, the role of functional foods using probiotics, prebiotics and other functional elements is becoming more important for health promotion, longevity, prevention of lifestyle related diseases and the reduction of the cost of medical care. The maintenance of health in daily life is becoming essential.
The Japan Bifidus Foundation has experience to support and promote the research into and development of intestinal microflora and functional foods, having been established as an academic society for more than 25 years.
Japan played a pioneering role in research in the field of intestinal microflora, but in recent years, leading edge research conducted by scientists in many countries has created tangible results.
The Japan Bifidus Foundation exists to advance research and development in the field of intestinal microflora as well as the mutual exchange and sharing of ideas and information among researchers throughout the world.
The Japan Bifidus Foundation is a society contributing to increasing the opportunity of communication and information to researchers worldwide and works to support the progress of research and development in the field of intestinal microflora of life sciences.
