About the Japan Bifidus Foundation(JBF)
The Japan Bifidus Foundation was established in April 1981 with support from Japan's academic circles and industry, obtaining sanction by the Ministry Education,Culture,Sports,Science and Technology. The main founders were the following four researchers: the late Professor Naoshi Honma of the Dokkyo University School of Medicine; Professor Zenzo Tamura of the University of Tokyo Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science; Professor Rintaro Nakaya of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University Faculty of Medicine; and Chief Investigator Tomotari Mitsuoka of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research(RIKEN). They were leading experts in the study of bifidobacteria and intestinal flora. A number of members representing some industrial firms also associated for the establishment of this Foundation.
Since its establishment, the Foundation has carried on the working in the following articles of II, III, and IV, for the purpose of collecting and providing in formations regarding the relation between intestinal flora, including bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, and the host.

Abstracts
This journal is published quarterly a year, in English. Starting from Vol. 15 (No. 1), the journal title was changed from "BIFIDOBACTERIA and MICROFLORA." . The journal is composed of full papers, notes, reviews, and bibliography of the world literature.

This journal is published twice a year, in Japanese. Starting from Vol.11(No. 1), the journal title was changed from "BIFIDUS." The journal is composed of general comments, original reports, reviews, experimental procedures, a Japanese summary of "BIOSCIENCE and MICROFLORA," a summary of literatures, related in formations, and a bulletin.

Annual Meeting and Seminar of JBF
- "Scientific Meeting for INTESTINAL MICROBIOLOGY" (in Japanese)
The Society meets is annually held in Tokyo. The first (1981) through the 16th (1996) annual meetings were held under the name of "General Scientific Meeting of the Japan Bifidus Foundation," but it was changed to the current name in 1997. At the second meeting of the SIM (1998), general lectures, a symposium, a special lecture, and a luncheon seminar were carried out, under the main theme of "Intestinal Bacteria and Bioprophylaxis." As to general subjects, studies were recruited for presentation regarding normal and pathologic bacterial flora, ecological behavior and benefit or negative effect by the members of the intestinal flora, gut immunity, food microorganisms, probiotics, and prebiotics.
