3. Plenary Special Session (June 30, Afternoon)
People and Coral Reefs -- Messages from Southeast Asia and Okinawa
Part 1 Characteristics and Present Status of Coral Reefs and Coastal Ecosystems in Southeast Asia and Okinawa
Part 2 Toward the Conservation of Coral Reefs in the Kerama Islands, Okinawa
Part 3 People and Coral Reefs in Okinawa(Panel Discussion)
Many coral reefs in Okinawa were bleached and destroyed during the global bleaching events in 1998. The recovery process of these heavily damaged coral reefs relies on recruitment of coral larvae from outer sources, which may be distant reefs with less damage and hence need long-distance larval transport. Kerama Islands have appeared to be one of such important sources for coral reefs in west coast of Okinawa Island. In the mini-symposium, characteristics of sea surface currents, water temperature, genetic analyses, marine protected areas, artificial coral larvae production and prevention measures for soil erosion and crown of thorn starfish will be discussed.
