Aim and Purpose of the Society

The Japan Society for Children’s Literature in English promotes research on children’s literature and culture in English-speaking countries; it aims to contribute to the further advancement in this field by cooperating with other researchers and organizations.

Activities

The Japan Society for Children’s Literature in English, established in 1970, has more than 300 members.  Members belong to one of three chapters (eastern, western and midland), and engage in the individual activities of each chapter.  The Society holds annual conferences, along with eastern chapter meetings, western chapter meetings, and midland chapter meetings.  The Society publishes the annual research journal, Tinker Bell, and edited Eibei Jidou-bungaku Guide (A Guide to Research in Children’s Literature Written in English) in 2001 and eight volumes of Eibei Jidou-bungaku Sosho (a series of English and American Children’s Literature) in 1986 and 1987, and twelve volumes of Gendai Jidou-bungaku Hyouden Sosho (a series of Biographical Studies of Modern Authors for Children in English-speaking Countries) are also being published.  Along with the distribution of the News Letter for the members, the Society is also engaged in many other activities. 

Projects:

     The Society is involved in the following activities:

*Hosting research meetings, lectures, exhibitions etc.

*Publication of journals, bulletins, pamphlets and books.

*Recommendations of the members (for various opportunities) for publishing research.  

*Collecting and preserving of the research materials.

*Exchange with international researchers and groups.

*Other enterprises which are regarded as necessary to achieve the goals as laid out by the society.

Application for membership

The purpose of the Society is to further research on children’s literature and culture of English-speaking countries. For the purpose, it strives to work in cooperation with specialists, institutions and organizations whose activities are related to the aims of the Society. Besides exchanging professional information, theoretical questions and initiating related discussions, the Society encourages everyone who loves and aims to study children’s literature in English to apply for membership, and helps to grow researchers in this field.  For this, the Society has two kinds of membership.


 1. Individual membership    
        for researchers in the field of  children’s literature studies in English
.
 
 2. Student membership   
         
for students in the field of children’s literature studies in English.

The annual membership fees are:
        for the individual membership  5000 yen with 2000 yen as admission fee
        for the student membership  5000 yen (no admission fee)


In order to join the Society:

1. Application form filled in and sent to the office (with the signature of the applicant).

2. Postal order for 2000 yen (admission fee) plus 5000 yen (annual membership fee) sent for the office.  For the student members, only 5000 yen as annual membership fee.


Members are entitled to:

*Receive issues of the journal, newsletter, membership list, and other pamphlets.

*Present papers at the conference, and submit articles to the journal.
