  • Welcome Message from the Chairman

Thank you for visiting the Web pages of the Japanese Society of Insurance Science.

The Japanese Society of Insurance Science (J.S.I.S.) is one of Japan’s oldest academic societies. Continuing the work of its preceding organization, “The Insurance Society” (1895-1940), J.S.I.S. was founded in November 1940, and is dedicated to the advancement of insurance science as a scholarly field of study in Japan. By providing a forum for discussion and the free exchange of ideas, J.S.I.S. aims to stimulate communication and cooperation among its members, and to facilitate relationships between its members and fellow insurance professionals abroad.

The concept of insurance developed from the need to manage risk. Practices somewhat similar to insurance have been around since ancient times, but insurance contracts as we know them today first appeared Italy in the 14th century. From there the practice of insurance gradually spread to the rest of Europe and the Americas, finally finding its way to Japan in the Meiji Era. I believe it is safe to say that, today, insurance is found wherever risk exists.

As a result of the impact of the information age on societies, we now live in a time and a world where an array of unprecedented and increasingly complex risks are emerging. Many of these risks can no longer be effectively managed in the traditional way, and novel approaches to risk mitigation will be required.

J.S.I.S. will continue to disseminate the opinions and research findings of its members via the “Journal of Insurance Science” (published quarterly), as well as through the Annual Meeting and the various regional meetings of the local chapters. This Web site is intended as an additional resource to provide information on our activities.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported and continue to support the Japanese Society of Insurance Science and its activities.

Sincerely,

Seiichi Ochiai
Chairman, Japanese Society of Insurance Science
Professor. Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, University of Tokyo
