About JSM

Invitation to the Exchange Program for Young Asian Microscopists in the 65th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Microscopy

Purpose

The Japanese Society of Microscopy (JSM) is a scientific organization of professionals who primarily work with or have an active interest in many kinds of microscopy in diverse fields of material, physical, biological, and medical sciences. The purpose of the Society is to advance and extend knowledge concerning the principles and applications of microscopes or related instruments, and to contribute to technical developments in industries and the improvement of human health. JSM holds nationwide spring and autumn scientific meetings every year. At the spring meeting more than 400 papers on various topics, especially microscopic imaging and compositional analysis, are presented and discussed. The autumn meeting is held in the style of a symposium at which particular topics are focused on and thoroughly discussed. The Society publishes two high-quality journals, Journal of Electron Microscopy and Kenbikyo.

History

JSM has been renamed from the Japanese Society of Electron Microscopy(JSEM) in 2003
The history of the Society dates back to 1939, when a university-industry cooperative research committee on electron microscopy was established by the Japan Society for Promotion of Science. This committee was organized at the request of researchers who specialized in electrical, chemical, physical, medical, and biological sciences and industries, and was supported by government subsidies. In 1946, this committee was reorganized as the Japanese Society of Electron Microscopy. Currently it has over 2,500 individual members and 75 corporate members.

Introduction to Electron Microscopy

In 1924, a French scientist, Dr. de Broglie, showed that an electron beam behaved like waves and had a wavelength much shorter than the sizes of molecules and atoms when accelerated. The first electron microscope was devised by two German scientists, Drs. M. Knoll and E. Ruska, in 1931. During the1960s, many electron microscopes were manufactured in Japan. Today, Japanese manufacturers account for a greater than 60% share of world electron microscope production. The electron microscope is an indispensable tool for research in the biological and materials sciences.

How to Join

Membership in JSM will bring you in contact with many other people working with various microscopes and related instruments and their applications. These contacts must be invaluable for members. The Society promotes communication among members in a variety of ways. An applicant for Regular Membership should be an individual who has an active interest in electron microscopes and other microscopes. An applicant for Student Membership should be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student. Corporate membership is also available for corporations, institutions, or organizations desiring to support the Society.

Application for Membership

To apply for membership in JSM, contact the JSM Office to obtain an Application Form and fill out and mail it. The Application Form can also be downloaded from this website. Usually it takes about 6 weeks to be approved for the membership. Members are charged annual dues to obtain benefits and to support the activities of the Society. Dues should be paid after membership is approved.

Attention:

Membership Dues

The admission fee is 1,000yen for Regular Members only. Annual dues are 9,500yen for a Regular Member or 6,000yen for a Student Member. Members who reside outside Japan are charged for additional postal in the amount of 2,500yen.

Updating Membership Information

If you are already a member and want to update your contact information, please send the new information to the JSM Office together with your membership number by mail or fax.

Benefits of Membership

JSEM is an internationally recognized professional society concerned with electron microscopy and related instrumentation. Specific benefits to members include:

* Subscription to the international journal, Journal of Electron Microscopy (JEM), published six times each year, and the membership journal in Japanese, Kenbikyo ("microscope" in Japanese), published three times each year.
* Reduced registration fees for all members and free registration fees for Student Members for the spring and autumn annual meetings and the many other meetings sponsored or cosponsored by JSM.
