"We are fortunate that the 9th ICP is being held in Japan since it is such a spectacular country. I know the meeting will run smoothly and all visitors will be well taken care of - that's just the way things happen in Japan.
The most difficult part for a visitor for the time outside of the conference will be choosing among all the fun and fascinating places to visit: the beautiful Matsumoto castle at the foot of the Japanese Alps, most modern Tokyo with its historical quarters and museums (and yes, Disneyland - more entertaining in Japanese than English!), Mashiko with its hundreds of pottery artisans. I traveled with my family for 3 weeks a few summers ago (my daughter says to be sure to mention the wonderful food and the welcoming people) and we all were sorry to leave. See you there!"

As part of my touring several convention sites in Japan as guest of the Japanese National Tourist office I had the opportunity to visit the Convention Center of Tsukuba city.

I was impressed by its modern style and layout. It contains state -of-art facilities fully equipped to accommodate various sized groups of conventioneers. It is user friendly and its lighting system and wall decorations render a feeling of warmth. Large windows connect the visitor with a beautiful Japenese garden system surrounding the Convention Center. The convention center incorporates restaurants and several small meeting facilities. It is run by a staff of well trained professionals. I felt very welcomed. The decorum will guarentee success to the conduction of the 9th ICP.
Several hotels nearby are within walking distance. The city of Tsukuba is considered the capital of Japanese science and includes numerous facilities to conduct research and teaching including the National Institute of Animal Health where Dr. Eiichi Momotani works. I encourage members of IAP to come to Japan for the 9th ICP and to enjoy the beauitiful Convention Center and city of Tsukuba.

" I enjoyed my short visit to Tsukuba in October very much. Thanks very much to you and your colleagues at the National Institute for Animal Health who were wonderful hosts. I was impressed with the modern facilities and restaurants in Science City and the more traditional aspects of Japanese life and culture in the nearby communities and at Mt Tsukuba. The facilities at the Tsukuba Conference Centre should make for an exceptional 9th Colloquium in 2007."

I have visited Tsukuba on two separate occasions with pleasant memories of both visits. Tsukuba City is a bustling city of research facilities, restaurants and shops. Tsukuba is located about 40 km northwest of the Narita airport but it is easily accessible by train or bus. During my last visit, Dr. Momotani and I viewed the convention center where the meeting will take place. The facility is very spacious and modern and is centrally located to hotels and restaurants for our convenience during the conference.

Japan is a beautiful country with mixture of grand tradition and modern lifestyles. This struck me on my last trip as the bus left
the buildings of steel and concrete in Tokyo behind us and within minutes we had ventured into the countryside where farmers were tending their fields. During this trip, I had the opportunity to attend a conference at Mount Fuji. The setting was absolutely spectacular with picture-postcard beauty and serenity. I would suggest a side trip to Fuji during your stay at the conference if time allows for it. The people of Japan are very welcoming and have great patience with those that do not speak their language or understand the nuances of their culture. I am looking forward to another visit and would encourage everyone to attend the conference so that they can immerse themselves in the lovely culture of Japan.
