| The Japanese-French Oceanographic Society
(JFOS) was founded in 1960 for the purpose of promoting scientific and technological exchanges between Japan and France in oceanography, fisheries and related sciences as well as promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of those sciences. To reach the objectives, the JFOS started a scientific journal soon after foundation and has held annual meetings and symposiums including French-Japanese Symposium of Oceanography under the joint auspices of related academic societies. There are 26 societies affiliated to the Japanese-French Hall
(Maison franco japonaise) and the JFOS is one of eight societies in natural sciences. In France, the French-Japanese Oceanographic Society functions. |
Publications: The scientific journal "La mer", the official organ of the society, is published quarterly (about 256 pages in total). Copies are distributed to the members, major domestic institutions, and 50 overseas institutions. |
Activities: The general meeting is held annually in spring. The society participates in the Japanese-French Academic Symposium and holds workshops with other related societies. For promotion of such academic exchanges between Japan and France as seminar and lecture, members are eligible to award a grant from the Japanese-French Hall (Maison Franco-Japonaise) for traveling expenses.
Awards: The JFOS Prizes are awarded to individual members who have made outstanding contributions to the scientific knowledge of oceanography, fisheries, or related sciences through papers published in "La mer". |
